Hey, everyone!
I’ve found the worst thing ever!
Pittsburgh Journalism

A girl that was a few grades below me in high school with has been found not guilty of beating a woman with a lead pipe because she cut the bathroom line at a club on the South Side of Pittsburgh. Story here.
That’s not the shocking part of the story though. A major metropolitan newspaper, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, has published the following line:
“Then Ms. Bannon and her crew started jawing with Ms. Talak. “
This is not a quote. This is a descriptive sentence written by the reporter, Daniel Maloy. It passed the editor’s desk and was deemed fit for print. I’m pretty sure before he turned in the story he said “Check this out, you jags.”
Watchmen

Unedited thoughts from a Facebook message to Seventy:
so i liked it too and recognized all the problems that everyone else had. most of them i was able to explain to myself even though they didn’t feel right (bloody action scenes, veidt’s arc, malin akerman, the music). my biggest issues is the ending. i don’t necessarily think that the squid should have been there, but the shock of seeing the carnage after it attacks is totally gone. all the action scenes are over the top bloody but this wasn’t shocking at all. i’m not sure if it was intentional but it made me remember this movie Fail Safe from the 50s (the president drops a bomb on new york to keep the russians from attacking everwhere). plus they showed the explosion in the trailer, which took away any shock value.
overall, he had a pretty impossible task. but i dont agree the book is unfilmable, its all there… more than most adaptations of books. the thing that could never be replicated was the impact it had on comics. how could that possibly translate, since comics have been building off of watchmen for years, and there’s nothing in book that would revolutionize movies the way the comic changed comics. if citizen kane were made into a comic, the story would be there but the importance could never make that transition.

I Live With A Child Molester

As I was stoning myself asleep last night, I heard a familiar noise and felt clumsy plop onto the end of my bed. Like Janie’s dad, he snuck into my room under the cover of night. Seconds later I was startled by heavy breating in my ear. He wasted no time and began to take advantage of me. First he rubbed his mouth against my cheek, marking his territory. I tried to keep him away with some light petting, but it wasnt enough. I thought he was gone, but then I heard what seemed to be the sound of pee hitting my bed. I was wrong though, he was just flicking his tongue at me, very close to my ear. I then knew he wouldn’t leave until he was satisified, although I do not know what that means for an animal with no penis…
One Lady Down

Steven Page (far right) has left the Barenaked Ladies, apparently for reasons tied to his cocaine arrest a while ago. He sang half the songs, and half of “One Week.” To compare BNL to a current Canadian rock group with two singers, imagine Spencer Krug leaving Dan Boeckner to run Wolf Parade on his own. Would Dan invite his wife Alexei into Wolf Parade, or would he invite the other 2-3 guys into Handsome Furs? Does Ed Robinson (center) even have his own side project that can now fold into BNL? Is BNL even still active? Are they selling millions of copies in Canada without us knowing? Did their Harrison Ford-like frantic Canadian lifestyle drive Steven to cocaine? Or did the cocaine drive the music? So many questions left unanswered.
Sorry, Mickey…

Someone needs to incorporate that drawing into a t-shirt asap.
Congratulations, Greta

My favorite actress of ‘08, Greta Gerwig (Hannah Takes the Stairs, Baghead, Nights and Weekends) has landed a role in Noah Baumbach’s new movie Greenberg, co-starring Ben Stiller. She’s much cheaper than Nicole Kidman, I suppose. Also her forehead moves. I’ve been planning a Greta Gerwig appreciation post but have been lazy about it. Also wanted to add her on Facebook but that would be creepy…
