Xmas ’08 On Demand Film Fest
Barren wasteland of a hometown + Comcast on demand + parents’ cable bill = Christmas Film Festival
1. Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson

Fairly straightforward documentary about the father of Gonzo journalism (is anyone else practicing this?). Lots of interesting footage, including the good doctor as a participant in some ’60s version of “Figure It Out.” Made me want to take some hallucinogens more than pick up a typewriter. Ralph Steadman’s transition from illustrator to druggy counterculture artist was almost as interesting as Thompson’s story. Biggest disappointment was not getting to see the funeral cannon go off. 3.5/5
20 Favorite Albums of 2008
Everyone says “Top” or “Best” before their lists. I haven’t been paying attention enough, so here are my favorites:
1. of Montreal – Skeletal Lamping

Most of these lists top off with Fleet Foxes. For everyone bored by them, this is the opposite.
2. TV on the Radio – Dear Science,

TVOTR has been one of those bands you’re “supposed to like” for years. This album fulfills that promise.
